Integrated Management of Pregnancy and Childbirth (IMPAC) Guidelines Review

One of the National MNCH Program’s strategic objectives is to increase the capacity of health managers and health care providers. The National MNCH Program has received a local adapted version of the Integrated Management of Pregnancy and Childbirth (IMPAC) training guidelines from World Health Organization (WHO).
 

The Program envisages that these guidelines would eventually replace the existing EmONC (Emergency Obstetrics & Newborn Care) and ENC (Essential Newborn Care) Trainings.

 

 

   

The National MNCH Program arranged One Day Critical Review Meeting on the 15th of July, 2010 to evaluate these guidelines for the local implementation. The noted professors and academicians from all over Pakistan participated in the consultation.The event was sponsored by JSI/PAIMAN (Pakistan Initiative for Mothers and Newborns).

 
The meeting started with tillawat. Dr.Farooq Akhtar National Program Manager (MNCH Program) welcomed the participants and appreciated the reviewers for taking time out for review process.  The welcome address by NPM was followed by sharing of the back ground of IMPAC by Dr. Ahmad Farah Shadoul of WHO.

The Session 1 focused on review of Maternal Component. The following maternal health experts made their presentations on Maternal Health Component of IMPAC.

  • Dr. Rizwana Chaudry (Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Rawalpindi Medical
  • Dr. Lubna Hassan, Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, HMC, Peshawar)
  • Dr. Azra Ahsan (Technical Consultant, NCMNH).
  • Dr. Amir Akram (Training Advisor,PAIMAN).
  • Professor Ghazala Mehmood (Professor, Gyn/Obs,PIMS).

In the post-lunch session, the deliberations found the newborn part of the IMPAC Guidelines. The presentations in this regard were made by;

  • Dr. Tabish Hazir (Professor of Paediatrics PIMS, Islamabad)
  • Dr. M. Mateen (FCPS, Master Trainer, ENC AJK).
  • Dr. Gohar Rehman, (Professor of Pediatrics, HMC, Peshawar)
  • Professor Mehmood Jamal (Professor, Pediatrics,PIMS)
  • Dr. Sajid Soofi (Assistant Professor, AKU)

After review presentations, the representative of key partner & donner agencies gave their remarks on the subject. They included;

  • Dr. Nabeela Ali (Chief of Party JSI/ PAIMAN)
  • Dr. Amanullah Khan (Sr. Director Health & Nutrition, Save the Children US)
  • Dr. Mubashar Malik (National Program Officer, UNFPA)
  • Dr. Samia Rizwan (UNICEF)

Dr. Nabeela Ali, Chief of Party JSI/PAIMAN highlighted the efforts of PAIMAN in Pakistan for supporting various Training Components of the MNCH Program. She said that PAIMAN Trainings are recognized and acknowledged by the government of Pakistan to be Skilled Oriented and Competency Based.

 
Professor Mehmood Jamal and Professor Ghazala Mehmood who have authored the local adapted version of these guidelines presented their view points about incorporation of comments & suggestions.

The remarks sharing by Partners/Donners were followed by concluding address of Professor Dr. Rasheed Juma; Director General, Ministry of Health. He expressed his thanks to the participants for their contribution to review the IMPAC Guidelines and highlighted the efforts of the National MNCH Program to strengthen the existing health care system by enabling the health care professionals to save the mothers and newborns through use of state of the art knowledge.
